SIG on Bio-Simulation
Chief Editor: Masaru Tomita (Keio Univ. Inst. for Advanced Biosciences)
Co-Editor: Hiroaki Kitano (Sony Computer Science Lab.)
In recent years, knowledge on the molecular biology of the cell has been
accumulating rapidly. Computer simulation plays a key role in uniting
this knowledge and in analyzing cell behavior. So-called
'in silico experiments', i.e. the formulation of a cellular model on a
computer and the prediction of cellular responses under different
conditions such as gene disruption or medication, will become a main
biological theme in the 21st century. Considering this trend, we
propose three major themes for the SIG.
- Development of a fundamental technology for cellular simulation,
e.g. simulation software, and knowledge representation for model
construction.
- Construction of different cellular models such as for metabolism
based on the above technology.
- Standardization of simulation software and knowledge
representation to exchange, evaluate, re-use, and update cellular
models among working projects.
Activities
To unite investigators interested in simulation, we
hold two meetings every year.
