SIG on Bio-Simulation

Chief Editor: Masaru Tomita (Keio Univ. Inst. for Advanced Biosciences)
Co-Editor: Hiroaki Kitano (Sony Computer Science Lab.)

In recent years, knowledge on the molecular biology of the cell has been accumulating rapidly. Computer simulation plays a key role in uniting this knowledge and in analyzing cell behavior. So-called 'in silico experiments', i.e. the formulation of a cellular model on a computer and the prediction of cellular responses under different conditions such as gene disruption or medication, will become a main biological theme in the 21st century. Considering this trend, we propose three major themes for the SIG.

  1. Development of a fundamental technology for cellular simulation, e.g. simulation software, and knowledge representation for model construction.
  2. Construction of different cellular models such as for metabolism based on the above technology.
  3. Standardization of simulation software and knowledge representation to exchange, evaluate, re-use, and update cellular models among working projects.
